Cyclonic drain

The link which Blip gives us doesn't explain why the direction of rotation changes with the depth of water in the shrub.

Okay - given that the hemispherical idea is but a myth, what do we have left to work with? We have the layout of the pipes, we have the velocity of the water leaving the bath, and we have the mass of the bathwater - okay, there are a number of possibilities to the Earth shattering conundrum that is JC's plug hole. To my tiny mind it would seem the change in direction is caused by a reduction in velocity relative to the reduction in mass. Altrernatively, the outflow is not sufficient to permit a steady stream and there is some back-wash as the pipe and/or sump's maximum capacity is reached.
